Perched along the sun-kissed shores of the French Riviera lies a gem of opulence and allure: Monaco. This tiny principality, renowned as a haven for the elite, offers a captivating blend of luxury, culture, and stunning landscapes. On a work trip to Cannes last year, I had a day off so I decided to make a day trip out to Monaco. Here are 11 of my best places to visit in Monaco.
1. Monaco Grand Prix Circuit
Out of all the things to do in Monaco, I was most excited about the Grand Prix Circuit. It was the main reason I ended up going to Monaco in the first place and probably one of the best places to visit in Monaco!
As home to the roar of engines, the smell of burning rubber, and the electrifying energy as Formula 1 race cars zoom past at incredible speeds, it’s an amazing experience to simply walk the track.
The whole track is around 2.75 miles (4.42 km) but I would recommend taking your time. The track will take you around most of the city and there are footpaths all along the way so you’ll be able to stop and sightsee as much as you want.
Pro Tip: Visit during a quieter day when the circuit is open to the public, so you can fully appreciate the challenging twists and turns without the crowds.
2. Monte Carlo Casino
Out of all the best places to visit in Monaco, this is one of those places that needs no introduction – the world-famous Monte Carlo Casino.
As you step into this magnificent establishment, you’ll be transported to a world of opulence and grandeur.
Channel your inner James Bond and take a spin at the roulette wheel or try your luck at the blackjack table.
Even if gambling isn’t your thing, the casino is worth a visit just to soak in the jaw-dropping architecture and soak up the glamorous atmosphere.
3. The Prince’s Palace
To discover all the rich history that Monaco has to offer, check out the Prince’s Palace.
It’s a majestic building perched on a rocky promontory, overlooking the sparkling azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea, and is truly a show of an architectural masterpiece.
While there, explore the beautifully decorated State Apartments where they’re decorated with some of the most exquisite frescoes, ornate furniture, and priceless artifacts.
Be sure to time your visit to coincide with the Changing of the Guard ceremony for a truly memorable experience.
Pro Tip: I would highly recommend taking the time to walk through the charming pedestrian streets of Monaco-Ville, also known as Le Rocher. The old town quarter is filled with quaint shops, cafes, and picturesque lanes, offering a cool opportunity to immerse yourself in the local ambiance.
4. Jardin Exotique
Set high above the city, this stunning botanical garden is a vibrant oasis boasting an array of unique succulents and breathtaking panoramic views.
Taking a leisurely stroll along the winding paths, surrounded by lush greenery, and discovering hidden nooks in the gardens was one of my favorite ways to spend a slow afternoon in Monaco.
Pro Tip: Make sure to visit the mesmerizing Observatory Cave, an underground wonder that features stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations. It’s like stepping into a secret world untouched by time.
5. Larvotto Beach
No summer escape is complete without a blissful day at the beach, and Monaco doesn’t disappoint!
Head to Larvotto Beach – Monaco’s very own stretch of paradise, boasting soft golden sand and crystal-clear waters. Whether you’re in the mood for a swim, sunbathing, or maybe even renting a jet ski, this beach has it all.
After a full day in the sun, relax at one of the trendy beach clubs or savor a delightful seafood meal at one of the waterfront restaurants.
Pro Tip: To enjoy the beach without the crowds, plan your visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. And don’t forget your sunscreen!
6. Oceanographic Museum
The Oceanographic Museum is probably one of the coolest aquariums I’ve had the chance to visit and best places to visit in Monaco.
It’s an architectural gem perched on the edge of a cliff and is home to a stunning collection of sea creatures.
Get up close and personal with sharks, turtles, and a multitude of exotic fish while also learning more about the museum’s crucial role in marine conservation efforts.
We didn’t get the chance to try this but if you are looking for a more unique experience, the museum offers scuba diving sessions so that you can really surround yourself with the marine life!
7. Le Metropole Shopping Center
Now a trip to Monaco isn’t quite complete if you don’t immerse yourself in its vibrant luxury shopping scene.
Le Metropole Shopping Center is a luxurious haven for fashion enthusiasts. It boasts an impressive selection of high-end boutiques and designer brands so it’s worth taking your time to peruse.
From elegant couture to sparkling jewelry, this shopping center has everything you need to revamp your wardrobe and embrace Monaco’s glamorous lifestyle.
8. Larvotto Trail
Are you itching to stretch your legs, catch some fresh air, and immerse yourself in nature’s embrace?
Look no further than the Larvotto Trail.
This picturesque hiking trail winds its way along the rugged coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the dazzling cityscape of Monaco.
As you meander through the scenic landscapes, keep an eye out for hidden coves and tranquil spots perfect for a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters.
Pro Tip: The trail is around 4.8 miles long and takes about 2 hours to complete. You’ll likely also want to take your time to soak in the views so I’d recommend packing a snack or picnic for your hike.
9. Le Rocher de Monaco
Le Rocher de Monaco, also known as “The Rock,” is the historic heart of the principality.
Some would argue that no visit to Monaco is complete without exploring this cultural gem.
I loved wandering through the narrow streets of the old town and browsing through the charming boutique and artisan shops.
Gaze up at the pristine façade of the Prince’s Palace, and uncover hidden treasures in the charming boutiques and artisan shops.
Be sure to take a moment to capture the panoramic views of the azure coastline, and breathe in the centuries of fascinating history that have shaped this captivating place.
Pro Tip: Visit in the evening and get a fantastic view of the Old Town and its sparkling lights.
10. Monaco Cathedral
Step inside a sanctuary of serene beauty at Monaco Cathedral, a majestic masterpiece that showcases magnificent Roman-Byzantine architecture.
As you enter this sacred space, allow the quiet ambiance to envelop you, and admire the stunning mosaics, breathtaking stained glass windows, and the awe-inspiring main altarpiece.
